About this Chapter

Sensor Management is a feature specific to the AixBOMS DCM Navigator application which allows AixBOMS to collect measured (live-) data from sensors and measurement objects, store the values for configurable intervals in the database and present them graphically in the form of charts.
Usually, this kind of data will be used for real-time availability and performance monitoring, alarming, medium and long term performance evaluations, as well as for trend evaluation and capacity management purposes.

Sensor (and Measurement) Objects

This feature is available for a number of object classes such as PDU, physical Server, UPS and Sensor whereas the latter one must have the Usage Measurement.

The specific forms for this feature are provided in the Sensor Management submenu available from the DCM main menu. The Sensor Detail Page contains general and component-specific attributes. For example, in the Position section on the Detail Page the position of a sensor within a distribution cabinet may be documented.

For each measurement component multiple sensor configurations can be created. They may be created and added to the component at the same time in the Sensor Configuration section on the component’s Configuration tab. Also, Sensor Configurations inherited from a template are listed and can be edited in this section. A new configuration can be created by using the dialog which appears when clicking the New Child Object button. It resembles the Sensor Configuration Detail page (Fig. 3).

It is recommended to document the primary IP address for components on their Networking tab. before any Sensor Configurations are assigned to them.

Sensor Configuration

The sensor configuration is an object which defines how, when and what kind of information is to be collected by a sensor. It can be associated with a sensor component via the CI of the corresponding object class or via its template.

Each sensor configuration object may collect a potentially very large amount (tens or hundreds of thousands of data entries) of sensor data sets. The amount of data and their availability on the AixBOMS Server depends on the “Query Interval” and the “Delete data older than (days)” attributes set.

The sensor configuration can be created for sensor templates in the Sensor Configuration section of a template’s Configuration tab. For individual components it can be configured in the Sensor Configuration section of a component’s Configuration tab.

It is highly recommended to document the primary IP address for a measurement-related component on its Networking tab before any sensor configuration is assigned.
